FRIENDSHIP IN MARRIAGE
His mouth is most sweet: yea, he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem. Song of Solomon 5:16
Yesterday, we learnt about the difference between an Acquaintance and a Friend and the dangers of not knowing the difference. Today, we will see how important PHILEO is in having a successful marriage.
The best marriages by far are marriages between friends. If you want a successful marriage, you have to become best friends with your spouse. Now, its not every lady that a man meets that he ends up dating and some of the ladies may end up as good friends, over the years.
Unfortunately, once a lady becomes good friends with a guy, the guy is off her list of eligible Bachelors. Any attempt by the fellow to turn the relationship into a romantic one is quickly rebuffed with the famous reply, “Let’s just be friends”. Most ladies think there cannot be romance between friends.
The truth is, if you marry a stranger, you’re in for a lot of surprises. And most folks get married to strangers. When a man is dating a Lady, he’s unlikely to reveal his true self. It’s the same with Ladies. They put on their best behaviour. These days, with false nails, wigs, eye lashes, make-up and false God knows what else, you can’t really know who you married until after the marriage.
But its normal to lower your guard with friends if you don’t believe there’s any possibility of transiting into a romantic relationship. The longer you’ve know a person the more you lower your guard and the real you comes out. But when you meet a fellow and you get into a romantic relationship straight away, you’re unlikely to ever really get to know them until after marriage when they will begin to lower their guard.
As you can see from our theme scripture, the Lovers were Friends. A friend is someone you know, like, trust and respect. These four things are important, if a marriage will succeed. Romance can and should come later. When you marry your friend, there will not be too many surprises in your marriage.
PRAYER
I thank you Lord for showing me the wisdom of marrying my friend. I will not follow the way of the world in choosing a spouse, I will follow the Kingdom way.
