THE IMPORTANCE OF ATTRACTION
As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, “I know what a beautiful woman you are.” Genesis 12:11
Yesterday we learnt that physical attraction is often sexual in nature and sex blinds. Once a couple gets into sex before marriage, it becomes difficult to know each other and you cannot become friends with a stranger. This is why couples often complain that their spouse changed after marriage. In truth, they didn’t change. They just never knew them.
Let me be clear. There’s nothing wrong about getting married to a good looking woman or man. There are no explanations for why a woman may prefer men that have a certain appearance and the same goes for men. I have to state that it’s important not to ignore your preference for a particular look in a man or woman.
It is unwise to get married to someone that doesn’t meet your specifications, thinking that preference will disappear after marriage. Well, it will not disappear and that becomes a recipe for disaster. There are folks who have gotten married to people they are ashamed to be seen with in public. Adultery is not far away.
You must be sure however that your desire for a good looking spouse is not because, deep within you, you are insecure about your appearance. If that is the case, getting married to a good looking spouse will not cure your insecurity.
If you are a Believer, you should know that Man is intrinsically a Spirit being who has a soul and lives in a body. If you are focused mainly on the appearance, you’re not being wise, you’re focused on the house. The inhabitant of a house is the real person that you are getting married to. You had better get to know that person.
People grow old, you know. Beauty fades, even after several plastic surgeries. People lose their model like figures. Mr. Universe might get fat if he stops going to the gymnasium. What happens when the main reason for the initial attraction is no longer there?. What happens when you meet a more beautiful or more handsome fellow?
PRAYER
Thank you Lord Jesus for giving me the wisdom to choose the right life partner. I will focus on the inhabitant of the house and not the house. Thank you for Grace not to choose my spouse after the flesh but after the spirit.
