MANAGING EXPECTATIONS
“So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul: When thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, And thy expectation shall not be cut off.” Prov 24:14
Did you know that one of the main reasons why marriages fail is wrong expectations? Most people enter into marriage with wrong expectations and when their expectations are not met, they are understandably disappointed. Some never recover from the disappointment and they head for the Divorce Courts sooner or later. “I didn’t sign up for this” they say.
There are many Christians who don’t have any clue at all about what a Christian Marriage is. If God ordained marriage, surely he had a picture of what that marriage would look like. He must have designed the way that marriage would work. Marriage is all about two people relating with each other, working to become united in mind and spirit. Surely, God must have designed a way to make this happen.
Unfortunately, most people don’t bother to even read God’s Word to discover God’s kind of marriage. The Bible does prescribe roles, responsibilities, rights and privileges for married couples. For example, the Bible prescribes regular sex between married couples. The Bible encourages romance in marriage as well. But people neither study the Bible nor attend Seminars and workshops where they can get knowledge on God’s prescriptions for the marriage He designed. So, they remain ignorant and their marriages fail.
You have to understand that if you enter into marriage without having a working knowledge of God’s prescriptions for marriage, you cannot experience the joy and fulfillment that God designed as an integral part of marriage.
In God’s type of marriage, the couple honour their spouse and put their spouse first. In the world’s type of marriage, the couple don’t honour their spouse or put their spouse first. It’s all about taking and not giving. They’re focused on what they can get out of the marriage not how to make their spouse happy and fulfilled.
Until your expectations are lined up with God’s Word, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. When your expectations are lined up with God’s prescriptions for marriage, you’re on your way to a happy married life. This is how you can be sure that your expectations in marriage will be met.
PRAYER
Thank you Lord for revealing what you expect of me in my marriage. I take Grace to fulfil my role and perform my duties to my spouse, acting in love and genuinely seeking the good of my spouse. I refuse to be selfish and self seeking and I refuse to base my expectations on the world’s prescriptions for marriage. Amen.
