ATTRACTION
And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.
Judges 16:4
Yesterday, we learnt the importance of distinguishing between Eros and Agape. We learnt that Lust is often behind Eros and a marriage built on Eros alone will definitely fail. Today, we will go deeper into the reasons why Eros should not be the most important factor when choosing a spouse.
Our theme verse states that Samson loved Delilah. The word loved is from the Hebrew word “Ahab” and it means to have affection for, sexually or otherwise. At that time, it was unlawful for a Jew to marry a Philistine but Samson didn’t care. You know how the story ended.
The challenge with Eros is that it is based on feelings. It is based on physical appearance. Men are more susceptible to Eros. It is said that men are aroused by what their eyes see. A man sees a beautiful woman and he wants her. At that time, he doesn’t care about consequences. He just wants to get into bed with her.
Sex blinds and this is one of the major reasons why people end up married to the wrong partner. Research has shown that the best marriages are between friends and you cannot be friends with someone you don’t know. Its difficult enough to get to really know someone even after dating for two or more years. When you throw sex into the mix, it’s simply impossible to know them.
This is the primary reason why sex before marriage is unwise. Look at Samson, whose name “means” brilliant in Hebrew. And he was brilliant. He spoke riddles that the Philistines couldn’t unravel. How come he couldn’t discern that Delilah was his enemy? The answer is simple. Sexual affection. There’s a reason where Apostle Paul said “Flee Fornication”.
My counsel to Christians who get involved in sex before marriage is always the same. Go your separate ways, don’t go ahead and get married. I guarantee that while you are apart, you will discover much more about each other that when you were together. If you still believe you’re God’s best for each other after staying apart for twelve to eighteen months, then by all means, you can get back together but no more sex.
PRAYER
Thank you Lord, for your word that gives me light. I choose to avoid relationships rooted in sexual affections from today and I receive the Grace to only be involved in relationships that will honor the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen
